  • Assessments or initial appointments are offered either in-clinic or virtually depending on your preference and availability.

    All assessments are the same length (up to 70 minutes) and are entirely one on one with your physiotherapist.

    They are the gold standard in treating pelvic floor issues as it gives us a clearer picture as what's going on but you can opt out if you so choose.

WHO IS PELVIC HEALTH PHYSIO FOR?

Pelvic floor physio can be helpful for those experiencing:

  • leaking urine, gas or faeces

  • pain with sex or tampon insertion

  • recovering from birth (vaginal or c-section)

WHAT HAPPENS DURING A PELVIC PHYSIO ASSESSMENT?

Preventing and rehabbing pelvic floor issues is where my zone of genius lies. Your session with me is a safe space where nothing is off limits, nothing is TMI and using the word “butthole” is not only welcomed, but encouraged.

Sessions can be either in-person or virtual depending on your availability or preference.

Your first appointment will be a deep dive into all aspects of your health; all health history, past birth & pregnancies, bladder & bowel habits, sexual function, aches & pains and so much more.

From there I will get you to go through some exercises and movements to see how your body moves, problem solve your current issues and build a plan to work towards your goals.

You will leave with exercises, advice and movement strategies to start immediately and will likely be recommended to have an internal assessment.

PELVIC PHYSIO IN PREGNANCY

From solving problems in pregnancy to tips on pushing and reducing tearing, I’ve got you covered.

We start with an initial assessment to go over your specific needs and concerns. You don’t have to wait until after baby is born to be free of pain, leaking, constipation or discomfort- let’s resolve those issues before you have another human to take care of!

A baby can only exit your body one of two ways- vaginally or via cesarean birth. We prep for either type of birth or can focus on c-section alone if it’s planned.

Postpartum prep is the session you didn’t know you needed. We complete this session BEFORE birth - for good reason. Pregnancy is 9 months but postpartum is the rest of your life, and I’m here to help make that transition as smooth as possible. as you recover from birth, build your strength and work towards your goals.

You will learn how to optimize your healing and safe exercises you can start immediately after birth all the way to 4 weeks postpartum to optimize your recovery, whether you had a vaginal or cesarean birth.

Six weeks is when you can have your first internal exam in-clinic so long as you’ve been cleared by your midwife or doctor.

ALL ABOUT INTERNAL ASSESSMENTS

An internal vaginal and or rectal exam can be performed to evaluate tension, strength and coordination of the pelvic floor musculature and how it works with the rest of your body.

  1. Your physiotherapist will first explain why they believe an internal exam would be helpful along with other pros and cons of internal palpation.

  2. The therapist will then leave the room to let you get undressed from the waist down (can leave your socks on if you like). You’ll hop on the table on your back and you will cover yourself with a sheet.

    **You must provide consent before any step of the exam and you are able to withdraw consent at any time - if you want to stop, we stop. No question.

  3. When the physio returns, first to be checked are muscles in your abdomen, legs or glutes externally.

  4. During the internal portion of the pelvic floor exam, your physiotherapist will gently insert one or two gloved fingers into your vagina or one finger into your rectum using lubricant. This allows the therapist to palpate each muscle group and evaluate its tension and function.

    **There is no speculum nor instruments inserted into the vagina or rectum.

  5. Physio will explain the exam is finished, leave the room to let you get dressed and will return to go over findings / next steps.

Depending on concerns presented and information that was gathered from your history and external exam, an internal exam may not be necessary. However, an internal exam is usually recommended as it is the gold standard for assessing pelvic floor muscles and associated structures.

If you choose not to proceed with an internal exam the physiotherapist will make recommendations for treatment from your subjective history and external exam to work towards your goals.
